| Inoue Orihime |
| Inoue Orihime grew up in Karakura Town with her older brother, Sora, away from their abusive parents. Though they struggled at first, it wasn’t long before they were living a happy life in their own home. Despite her brother working constantly to support the two, Orihime beheld him with the utmost admiration and affection. The pair lived in harmony for many years, Sora working, Orihime attending school, and both contributing to their small family unit. But all good things must come to an end. Six years later, while she was still quite young, her brother was involved in a car accident that claimed his life. Though she mourned the loss of her only true family, Orihime honored his memory everyday by erecting a small shrine for him in her home and wearing the hairpins (later the Shun Shun Rikka) he had bought her. Not long after her Sora’s death, Orihime met Arisawa Tatsuki, a brazen tomboy. Constantly being teased for her long hair, Orihime and Tatsuki soon formed their own family: Tatsuki was the protector, while Orihime was the maternal, albeit goofy figure. Before long, the two became the closest of friends and spent much of their time together. In contrast, because Orihime’s social life had suddenly grown (though only marginally), she had less and less time to pray for her late brother. It was for this reason that he returned when she was fifteen – as a Hollow. Consequently, this was Orihime's first introduction to the world of death gods and their enemies. Her brother’s Hollow, overcome with rage, attacked Orihime and Tatsuki. Luckily, a shinigami representative was surveying Karakura at the time. After Sora's monstrous reincarnation was vanquished and his soul freed by Orihime’s classmate, Kurosaki Ichigo, she developed a close bond with him and Kuchiki Rukia. She later accompanied Ichigo (as well as Yasutora "Chad" Sado, Ishida Uryuu and Shihouin Yoruichi) to Soul Society to rescue Rukia from execution. Upon returning to the Living World (anime filler episodes excluded), Orihime wished to further develop her power. Feelings of remorse filled her after her venture into Soul Society, and she was completely overcome with doubt in her abilities. Orihime’s contrition was confirmed in following battles with Arrancar, where she often found herself unable to protect her friends. Despite the progression of her healing abilities, she was still hounded by regret – after all, she wouldn’t have to heal her friends if she could only stop them from getting hurt. Feelings of remorse filled her after her venture into Soul Society, and she was completely overcome with doubt in her abilities. Despite the progression of her healing abilities, she was still hounded by regret – after all, she wouldn’t have to heal her friends if she could only stop them from getting hurt. It was during this time, as well, that she realized her love for Kurosaki Ichigo, and her guilt intensified over her jealousy of Kuchiki Rukia. However, while Ichigo spent much of his time training with the Vaizored (and Chad and Ishida were undergoing similar regimens), the unprotected Orihime was targeted by Aizen for her “special powers”. It was not long after this that she was kidnapped and brought to Hueco Mundo by Ulquiorra Schiffer, emissary of the Espada. She quickly learned that her powers were unique: she did not merely have the ability to heal, but to reverse entire situations. While Aizen mused with the thought of manipulating this power to his will, Orihime silently resolved to do the exact opposite: she would send the Hougyoku back into nothingness. For the past year, Hueco Mundo is where Orihime has stayed “comfortably” prisoner. Despite wanting nothing more than a world at peace, Orihime is constantly forced into mentally and physically pressuring situations; many of the male Arrancar see her as a pet, while many of the female Arrancar ignore or ostracize her for her “close relationship” with Aizen. As such, she has become quite familiar with Las Noches and its inhabitants, probably more so than she would like. Six months after her internment, she abandoned the thought of rescue: multiple Espada had reported the deaths of her friends. Overcome with grief at the supposed loss of her companions’ lives, she fell into depression and occasionally lapsed back into such bouts. Though, in spite of her despair, Orihime’s plight only served to fuel her determination. Despite undergoing much strife and hardship, Orihime continues to strive for hope and has vowed to erase the Hougyoku in her friends’ names – even if it means destroying herself in the process. |
